Tupalo nominated for the Wiener Zukunftspreis

We were surprised recently with the news that Tupalo has been nominated for the Wiener Zukunftspreis in the category "Startups and Newcomers". Yay!

Every year local Austrian magazine NEWS along with the City of Vienna (AKA Stadt Wien) nominate Austrian-based companies among a variety of categories for this prestigious award, and also a little bit of prize money.

Joining us in the startups category is Screenkids.tv, Loytec, Adaptivia, NOUS and HEI (who make really beautiful solar lighting solutions!).

Tupalo first in Futurezone's Austrian Startup series

Austrian Broadcasting (ORF) has begun a wonderful (and long-overdue) series on Austrian-based internet startups via their Futurezone web-property (think of it as Austria's version of Wired, with Youtube's commenters).

First up to bat is Tupalo, where we've had a wonderful interview published talking about local businesses, web 2.0 and venture capital in Vienna. There's even a few photos of us sitting in the Coffeeshop Company on Mariahilferstrasse close to the heart of Vienna, where we are hard at work on the new updates we've got in the works for Tupalo (hence the laughing and the smiling).

But worry not all of your Austro-web 2.0 fans, over the coming weeks many more Austrian-based startups will be featured, unfortunately we're sworn to secrecy so we can't spoil you on who and when.

A new update to Tupalo today!

We've added the ability for users to find friends on Tupalo who they may know from other social networks around the web!

For now we're supporting Twitter, Flickr, Last.fm and LiveJournal, but we're going to be adding many more services in the near future (including Soup.io)!

By adding your Twitter username, you will also be able to Tweet directly from Tupalo spot pages, giving you the ability to send a 1-click Tweet letting your friends know where you're heading and when! In the future we'll be adding more nifty integrations for other services, such as more easily adding your photos from Flickr to spots, posting your reviews to your blog and other networks and much more.

We've also added a member search, allowing you to search for your friend's names or usernames! If you don't find anyone, how about inviting them to join you in sharing the best stuff in your neighborhood?

Updated terms of use and privacy policy

As Tupalo grows and more new features are being added, from time to time we'll have to update our Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. As promised, we're updating our blog, letting users know of the additions being made.

We've done our first update to our ToS and PP ever, so here's a brief summary:

1. Cleaned up the overall formatting to make things easier to read in preparation for upcoming service upgrades and new features
2. Updating terms for domain in case of any disputes (ToS - VI. Misc)
3. Updated terms regarding the republishing of Tupalo content on other services, for instance, in search engine results, maps services, on external social networking profiles via widgets, etc. (VII. ToS - Ownership)
4. Updated and clarified policy regarding transfer of personal information. Added another confirmation that we'll never sell, rent or knowingly do anything otherwise unsavory with your personally identifiable information (PP - V. Transfer of Personal Information)
5. Updated policy regarding users posting private or identifiable information via user-generated content. Basically informing users they shouldn't post private information to reviews or groups which they wouldn't want appearing in public search engines (PP - IV. User Created Content)
6. Updated policy on links leading to external sites and services which generate from user-generated content found via the Tupalo service (PP - VIII. External Links)

We've started testing worldwide support for Tupalo, so you can share your favorite local tips from Wien to New York to Hong Kong and everywhere in between. It's still a work in progress as we clean up some issues with address formating in certain countries and a few smaller issues related with localization.

We've also added new categories for Hotels, Salons and spots for Activities (gyms, parks, pools, baths, sport centers, etc) just in time for those of you who want to find the right salon to get your hair done before you take off for Summer holidays or to the local park.

Wien in 3D on Virtual Earth

Microsoft began quietly rolling out Vienna, Austria in 3D on Virtual Earth over the weekend, officially announcing it today via their Partners Blog.

The models are all pretty low-poly for now, but more high quality models are coming very soon. This makes Vienna the second European city to be digitalized in 3D via Virtual Earth.

Tupalo business results are all over Live Maps and Virtual Earth Search, in case you want to fly over the best stuff in your neighborhood in 3D.

Sadly, the 3D view in Virtual Earth / Live Maps is Windows-only for now.

Comment on reviews! You can now leave small comments on the reviews of other Tupalo users. Ready? Discuss!
You can collect and categorize your favorite spots into custom sets! Whether you are collecting where to get the best Soy Lattes in Vienna, Austria (http://tupalo.com/users/3/sets/214-soy-latte) or just want to organize your favorites, sets let you do it! This is a very early version of user sets, so expect massive improvements and widgets coming soon!
We’ve majorly overhauled the groups (http://tupalo.com/groups), with a completely refreshed layout, consisting of lots of large fonts and white space! Breath that white space in deep.
Along the lines of group improvements, we’ve rolled out the first version of group sets! Members of public groups can now collect and share spots with their fellow group members. Like for instance, where to find the best ice cream in your area (http://tupalo.com/groups/the-ice-cream-quest)
Overall site performance should be much more responsive

Hi all! It’s been awhile and we’re sorry for all of the stealthiness going on around here lately, we’re working on improving our blogging routine and will soon have regular updates, posts and other goodies for all of you to enjoy.

On to the juicy stuff! We’re testing out the first run of our Facebook “application” and inviting you to give it a go! For now, we’re focusing on registered Tupalo users, thus you have to have a Tupalo account to get usage out of it. Upon installing over at Facebook, you’ll be prompted for your Tupalo login, if you aren’t a member of Tupalo (for shame!) you can easily click through and signup in all of about 15 seconds.

After verifying your Tupalo credentials, you will see your friend’s recent activity in news feed form, which you can use to keep up with your Tupalo pals via Facebook! In addition, when you make a discovery, review a location or add a location as a favorite via Tupalo, we will push that update to your Facebook mini-feed, keeping your Facebook friends in the loop.

The Tupalo App is very much a work in progress and we plan on adding many new features over the coming weeks, so stay tuned.

Hi all! Sorry for the massive delays in postings going on around here, but, needless to say, things have been very hectic in the land of Tupalo. We have some exciting news coming in the near future, so, please bear with us and of course keep your eyes on Tupalo for some of the exciting changes we’re starting to roll out.

As many of you may have noticed over the past few weeks, we’ve been rolling out a few new features for Tupalo, namely on the directory side. Our biggest so far, we’ve expanded Tupalo to support all of the United States, Canada, Austria, Germany, Spain and Belgium. At the moment, we’re now supporting everything from the largest cities to the smallest towns in these countries and you can guarantee we’ll be expanding the list of supported countries in the coming months. You can search for your town by visiting our handy Places page, then start by adding your favorite stuff in those neighborhoods, towns and cities.

Hi all! We’ve been busy improving Tupalo with some exciting new changes, so, please accept our apologies for being so behind on writing new updates! We hope you can find it in your hearts to forgive us!

Before we can announce some of the exciting news and improvements at Tupalo though, we want to tell some of you about the formation of the OpenCoffee Vienna chapter! Together with Stefan over at I5 we are co-ordinating the local OpenCoffee meetups here in lovely Wien.

The first official OpenCoffee Vienna meetup is taking place Thursday, September 20th at 1000am in the 7th district, at Ronahi (Schottenfeldgasse 18, 1070). If you are interested in web 2.0 and would like to attend, please do, it’s open to the public, free WIFI is available as is wireless printing and iBook rental (2 EUR an hour). We’d love to hear about what you are working on, or thinking of working on! Head over to Upcoming.org if you’d like to RSVP and join the OpenCoffee Club Vienna usergroup.

What is OpenCoffee you ask? Good question! OpenCoffee was originally created by Saul Klein back in February to encourage internet startup entrepreneurs, developers and investors to organize real-world informal meetups to chat, network and grow. All over a cup of coffee. Way to go Saul! The idea worked and OpenCoffee has boomed to over 70 chapters world-wide, with more being added weekly. Groups rolling out, summer heating up

Hi all! It’s been a hot past few weeks here in Vienna, with some days being so warm that our development servers (and developers) randomly decided to turn themselves off in order to get some rest. We whipped them back into gear and got them going again, so do not be alarmed.

Though it’s been quiet lately with the live version of Tupalo, we’ve been working heavily in the backend, doing some tweaks and improvements to our search functions and extending Tupalo beyond its prototype, among many other small improvements. The major addition to the site so far is user-generated groups, including discussion forums, for now.

User-generated Groups

We’ve rolled out the first version of our user-generated discussion groups. What does this mean? This means that you can create a themed group, say, Vegans and Vegan Friendlies, for you, your friends and other Tupalo users to drop by and discuss, share knowledge or argue (in a polite sort of way) over whatever topic your heart desires. Since this is the first version of our groups, all groups are automatically public, but, we’ll be adding invitation-only and private groups soon.

Some more upcoming improvements to the groups

Public, Public + Invite-only & Private (invite-only) groups

UI and navigation improvements, making it easier for users to navigate between groups and the main Tupalo service.

Recommend spots to groups. Member of a group searching for the best French cuisine in Vienna, Austria and you just stumbled upon a wonderful little French bistro you want to recommend? Easy! Soon you’ll just be able to click a handy “send-to” link from our spot pages and easily forward a link to that business to the French food group.

Group tagging (making it easier for users to search within, classify and describe groups)

Quickly and easily invite friends to a group. We’re implementing this as quickly as possible, because, who wouldn’t want their friends involved in a discussion?

Quickly link to spots within discussions. Allowing users to quickly link to a spot within Tupalo simply by typing its name and address into a field and clicking the go button.

We’ve got a handful more updates we’re working on for the groups, as well as other new features we want to roll-out before we officially launch the Tupalo er….beta, alpha, omega or whatever version, so keep your eyes on the Tupalo blog. At yesterday’s Cisco Expo 2007 conference, Tupalo had the honor of being voted as one of the top 5 social networks in Austria, along with a few other Austrian startups, listed below. Though we didn’t win, we certainly had a great time on Cisco Austria’s dime and we’d like to thank all involved for the invitation (and free food), praise and chance at being voted the best social software targeting web 2.0 in Austria.

Raumdirekt is an online directory for people with private and commercial working space which they want to rent out temporarily or for longer periods of time. Matching up creative people in need of workspace with other creatives who can offer workspace is an exciting prospect.

A social network where people can not only store their bookmarks, Del.icio.us-style, but also add other forms of knowledge which they can then share and discuss with other users.

Surprise! Our beloved members may notice that Tupalo has gotten a little bit of a face lift. Do not be alarmed! Though things have been awfully quiet around here lately, behind the scenes here at Tupalo HQ we’ve kicked into overdrive and this is just the beginning. But while I have your attention, did you know “Aue Te Ariki! He toki ki roto taku mahuna!” in Maori means: “Oh my God! There’s an axe in my head!”? I didn’t either.

This latest update to Tupalo sees us switching back to a static width layout, though in the future we’ll allow an option for choosing between the static or the dynamic-width version of Tupalo. But as you can see, we’re still keeping our big ole’ map handy, cause, we dig maps, bigger the better! The user profile also has gotten a once-over, bringing a little structure to our madness and showing off a user’s statistics a bit more prominently. Naturally with 3 game developers behind Tupalo, you can expect some more fun regarding these numbers coming in the future.

There are more small fixes and updates than meets the eye in this new version, but, here’s some of what we’ve fixed and updated:

Barcamp Vienna - June 10th

It’s that time of the year again! Barcamp Vienna is a GO and it’s happening this weekend, June 10th, 2007 at the ever so impressive WerkzeugH cafe and brain-center in the lovely 5th district of Vienna, Austria.

The agenda hasn’t been finalized yet, but hey, this is an un-conference, so take that! Look for an interesting presentation from our pals over at Tag Your City, maybe a talk by Paul BÃ¶hm about his early-stage startup incubator YEurope and perhaps even an appearance by Michael BreidenbrÃ¼cker, talking about his wonderful project, Lovely Books.

Tupalo in startup2.0's top 15 new European startups

The team behind startup2 have announced their selection for the top 15 new web startups in Europe and Tupalo is one of the 5 projects chosen by the technical committee for inclusion within the top 15! We’ll be presenting Tupalo for a short 5 minutes in Madrid on Thursday evening, May 10th, in the hopes that we’ll make it into the final 5 new European web startups being presented at the Guggenheim in Bilbao on May 24th.

We’d like to thank the technical committee for taking their interest in Tupalo, even though we certainly didn’t have the most votes of all projects. We’re joining some of the most exciting new startups coming out of Europe on stage and certainly are honored to be listed among them.

The rest of the top 15 new startups in Europe:

Panoramio.com: Photo-sharing of geolocated photos. Panoramio offers 2 Gb of free storage for photos. The site has 330.000 registered users and 1,1 million geolocated photos.

11870.com: “a real-life delicious” where you can remember and share with your friends all kind of places (from business to sculptures) around the world using comments, tags, photos and videos. Launched in feb 07, reached #1 in technorati.

Trivop: Trivop is the first videoguide for the hotel industry. it’s a mashup with video, map and comments from users (through tripadvisor). We are convinc that video give travellers the transperncy they need before booking as today just a few photos is not sufficient enough. We want to become the youtube of the hotel industry.

Personalised Information Environment: A new internet application developed by a hungarian team can virtually learn what kind of tv shows and movies do the users like, and make recommendations for the following days accordingly. Musorajanlo.hu applies the latest technologies: machine-learning and data-mining, all executed on a grid.

hipoqih: A system composed by a Web and plugin for mobile devices that allows to record alerts and URLs associated to any geopoint in the planet. These alerts can be seen automatically in terminals with the plugin when approaching that geopoint, so that the information arrives when you get to the place that interests you.

nvivo.es: Gig based social network. Its main objective is that you never loose that gig again. Follow your favourite bands and coolest venues of your city, met other fans and interact adding comments, tags, joining and attending gigs and get or ask for all the gig info you need. With Musicbrainz, last.fm, Google Maps and 11870.com mashups. Live music fans never got that easy.

soZiety is a language-learning social network based on Skype. soZiety is a great, dead simple method people can use to have fun learning a language while meeting new people and making some bucks.

Properazzi – the property search engine (): Properazzi is a crawler-based web 2.0 property search engine for all of Europe. We launched in March 2007, and currently list 1.8 million sale and rental properties in 45 European countries, in all European languages and currencies. We’re backed by Mangrove Capital Partners (Skype, Quintura, Nimbuzz). We’ve got a highly international team and are based in Barcelona, Spain.

MenÃ©ame: Meneame is the leading Digg-like website in Spanish. It helps anybody promote news from any source by creating new pages according to users’s votes. It was launched in 2004 from Mallorca.

SlideBurner: SlideBurner allows you to share and discover easily slideshows/presentations (PowerPoint or OpenOffice files). Upload your files and they can quickly be viewed online in any web browser on any platform. Anywr.com: Anywr is a web and mobile system that offers simple, yet powerful services for managing contacts, calendars, events and communications virtually from anywhere: using browsers, mobile devices or any other of the over 750 million compatible devices available today.

5min: 5min is a place to find short video solutions for every practical question, and is also a place for people who want to share their knowledge. 5min’s vision is simple: any solution can be visually explained in 5 minutes. Users of the 5min platform will benefit from a visual illustration of any solution through a Smart Player. Unlike all of the video sites on the net, 5min created a video player that is adjusted specifically to the instruction field.

QuestionForm: questionform is a web application for creating, publishing and analysing online surveys and forms.

Spanish social networking specialist, Alianzo and La Caixa (one of the largest banks in Spain) have been busy this month, organizing startup2.0 a European-wide social contest to vote on the 10 most exciting startups in the EU. By utilizing open-source software, such as Pligg, startup2.0 are taking advantage of the wisdom of the masses to determine the top 10 most exciting web startups in Europe, which stand to win free advertising from Techcrunch, participation in training programs from the Center for Entrepreneurial Learning and presentations of the projects at the e-Business Global Forum. The top 10 startups will then be voted on by the official startup2.0 jury, consisting of the who’s who of the European tech scene, such as MartÃn Varsavsky (fon) and Philipp Lenssen (Google Blogoscoped) among many others.

Tupalo is a late edition to the first-round of voting and currently the only startup representing Austria, so feel free to stop by and see what Europe has to offer!

Personal RSS feeds and location editing rolled out!

We’ve been busy bees lately and have started slowly rolling out a few new features for Tupalo. Two recently exposed and oft requested features are personal RSS feeds and location details editing, which I’ll touch on below.

<u>Personal RSS feeds</u>

An oft requested feature, we’ve rolled out personal RSS feeds per user, which can be found on every profile page next to the user name. This allows users to subscribe to not only your reviews, but is a first step in allowing users to syndicate their reviews in other applications, such as on Tumblr or personal blogs. For now, personal RSS feeds are full feeds, so they include the complete review, as well as all personal tags applied to the location, but we’ll soon offer users the ability to create custom widgets, feeds and ‘bling’ to syndicate their reviews wherever their hearts desire.

<u>Location details editing</u>

We’ve now opened up location details editing to registered users! By allowing users to edit location details, we are giving members the chance to moderate the information that is present with Tupalo, making sure that our city guides are as accurate as possible. To edit a location, simply log in and visit the location page, there you’ll see a button which says Edit details. Give it a click and all editable fields will appear with a nifty little edit button, which you can click and make your changes. You can even drag and drop the map marker, which can sometimes not be placed in the correct location on the map. All changes are tracked and will of course be submitted for a moderator to review after you have saved your edit.

Tweet your heart out with Tupalo's Twitter integration

As many of you undoubtedly know, Twitter is one of the hottest little web gadgets to hit the scene in the latest months. Myspace who? YouTube wos? It’s all about the 140 words or less tweets of your circle of friends. So what a better usage of Twitter is there than to let your friends know where you’re heading and what time to meet you there? That’s right, NONE!

We’ve deployed two fun little features today, integrating Tupalo with Twitter in ways we’ve not seen similar mapping applications do (yet). One let’s you quickly and easily tweet to your friends from within a location page in Tupalo, the other let’s you be social and keep up with every new review and location added to Tupalo. Let’s get it on.

1) Tweet from within a location page

Heading out to lunch and want to let your Twitter friends know where to meet you? Now you can simply visit a location page to quickly and easily send a tweet to your friends list. Simply find the location you’re heading to on Tupalo, click the “Twitter It” button, enter your username and password and off you go. We’ll pre-fill a simple message, which you can easily edit and send. All of your friends on Twitter will receive a nice little tweet from you with the name and URL of the location you’re heading to. 2) Be friends with the Tupalo Twitter bot!

You can also keep up with everything going on in the world of Tupalo via our cute little Twitter bot, which is announcing every new review and addition to Tupalo. Our Twitter bot gets a little lonely sometimes, so if your Twitter wants some company, bring your Twitter over for a play-date and make a new friend.

Gravatar support added to Tupalo

Sharp-eyed Tupaleros may have noticed that a few weeks ago we slipped in support for globally recognized avatar service, Gravatar, only, we never actually announced support. Shame on us!

Gravatar stands for Globally Recognized Avatar, and is an ingenious (and free) service, which allows you to keep a centralized avatar which then follows you around to Gravatar-enabled blogs, forums and social networks (hellooooo!). Gravatar recently had some server issues, causing a little downtime, but, like us, they are a small and scrappy group of developers doing their best to accomplish something special, so we’re happy to integrate their service into Tupalo.

If you’re a Gravatar user, the next time you edit your Tupalo profile, simply click the “Load from Gravatar” button next to your profile image and we’ll automagically import your Gravatar and place it into your profile. If you’re not a Gravatar member and you’re sick and tired of always creating and importing a new avatar for every forum, social network and group you’re a part of, head over to Gravatar and become a member. It takes a short while for your first Gravatar to become active within their system, so, please be patient if you are just signing up and unable to import your first Gravatar into Tupalo.
